A battle for heart and mental health

Hosted by Heart Foundation ACT Patron Richard Rolfe and Victoria Cross for Australia recipient, and White Cloud Foundation Patron, Corporal Ben Roberts-Smith VC MG, the special guest list for the evening included the Prime Minister of Australia Julia Gillard, The Governor General of Australia Quentin Bryce, other Victoria Cross recipients Keith Payne VC and Daniel Keighran VC, George Cross recipient Michael Pratt, and retired Lieutenant General Ken Gillespie. Sunrise presenter Natalie Barr was MC.

The 325 guests were treated to a short ceremony in the Commemorative Area followed by a tour of the Australian War Memorial with special guests. Canapes and drinks flowed in the Western Courtyard Gallery room and marquee while stories were shared by Ben Roberts- Smith, seven year old heart disease survivor Lily Haskins and her family, and Ken Gillespie.

Having suffered a heart attack at just 12 days of age, Mr Richard Rolfe - also the owner of Rolfe Renault who were a major sponsor of the event - said working with the White Cloud Foundation was a perfect way to raise awareness of the relationship between heart disease and depression.

"Money raised through the auction helps fund research for the prevention and treatment of heart disease and depression - two of our biggest disease burdens," Heart Foundation ACT Patron, Richard Rolfe said.

Supported by White Cloud Patron and Victoria Cross recipient, Ben Roberts-Smith VC MG, both men wanted to raise funds for the causes while promote the benefits of a healthy mind and a healthy heart.

Ben Roberts-Smith said he had been moved to support the White Cloud Foundation after learning of the numbers of Australians affected by depression.

"Each year, about one million Australian adults experience depression, which also affects their families and carers," Ben Roberts-Smith said.

"Support through the Cross Your Heart event will enable us to raise the profile of depression and heart disease within the community - to ultimately save lives," Ben added.

Mild depression is associated with doubling the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and heart attack and severe depression has an even more profound effect - with up to five times the rate of cardiovascular disease as compared to non-depressed people.

Total funds raised from the evening will be announced over the coming days.

The Heart Foundation ACT and the White Cloud foundation were extremely humbled by the generosity of 'Cross Your Heart' sponsors, supporters and guests and extended a big thank you to all, in particular, The Military Shop.
